Frequently Asked Questions

What is a CSA?

A CSA, or Community Supported Agriculture, is also known as subscription farming.  We work directly with you, without the intermediary of stores or wholesalers, which gives us the opportunity to provide the freshest quality vegetables and competitive organic prices. The way a CSA works is very straight-forward. With a preseason payment, you purchase a "share" of our season's harvest. You then receive a weekly share of our fresh produce during the course of our harvest season.

What is a shareholder?

When you sign up, you dedicate yourself to being our customer - i.e. a shareholder - for the season. This provides us with a secure market, which is a welcome measure of certainty in the unstable world of farming! We, in turn, dedicate ourselves to being your farmers and providing you with a varied, nutritious vegetable diet for the season.

What does it mean to be a shareholder?

We strive to bring you a beautiful and bountiful share each week, but since our boss, Nature, provides no guarantees, we can't offer any either. One of the premises of a Community Supported Agriculture program is that the shareholder shares, through the veggies, the farmer's experiences of Nature's mischief and blessings (although our years of farming have taught us to minimize as many risks as possible --from draught [we have an excellent irrigation system] to floods [we have the right types of equipment to get critical farming jobs done in short, dry windows of time]).

Is there a deadline for signing up?

There is no deadline for signing up for a given season. Shares are sold on a first come, first serve basis and are available until we are sold out.

It seems like a lot of food, do you offer half shares or quarter shares?

Yes, currently offer full shares, which contain what we estimate to be enough vegetables for four typical adults (or perhaps two vegetarians!), as well as half shares and quarter shares.  Also, many shareholders choose to share their box among family and friends.

What happens if I know I will be unable to pick up a box?

When you know that you will be unable to pick up your share during your scheduled time, you may send a friend or neighbor to pick up your share for you.  In extraordinary circumstances, we can arrange for you to pick up your share on a different day.  If you need to do this, please let us know at least 48 hours before your scheduled pick-up.  Planning for and coordinating harvest logistics can be very hectic at the height of season, and we may be unable to arrange an alternate pick-up if you do not give us this advance notice.

Can I volunteer on the farm?

Yes, we love having volunteers join us in our daily work of growing and harvesting vegetables and herbs. One reason is that the work is quicker and easier with another set of helping hands. However, probably the strongest reason is that we enjoy meeting our shareholders and having new people with new perspectives jump into our midst for a bit to spice up our lives. We have also found that shareholders love joining us. Being involved in caring for your own vegetables can truly enrich your relationship with the farm and deepen your understanding of what we do and why we embrace this lifestyle. We also invite non-shareholders to join us. The busiest mornings for us are Monday, Thursday, and Saturday. If you would like to come out and volunteer, call Billi at 216-3972 to arrange a time and day to come help out!
